Laser is an acronym meaning light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.

The diagnostic laser works by emitting a beam of light in the direction of the occlusal (chewing) surface of a tooth.

The reflected light is registered and compared by the instrument’s computer for differences in density signifying underlying decay. At a certain graduated reading, an audible beep alerts both dentists and patients to the presence of decay.
